Design-Build Firm Sweeps Healthcare Division, Wins Project of the Year
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Haskell took home four Excellence in Construction Awards, including Project of the Year, and one Award of Merit from the Florida First Coast Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) for its work on Baptist Medical Center South, Emerson Medical Plaza, Baymeadows Primary Care and Ave Maria University’s Mega Dorm. Haskell received the Project of the Year award for its work on Baptist Medical Center South-Tower D, a new eight-story patient tower with a ninth floor mechanical penthouse and a six-story parking structure.
“We are honored to be recognized by our peers in the industry for our work on so many outstanding projects throughout the First Coast and Florida,” said Paul Tyler, president of Haskell’s Commercial Group. “We are fortunate to have such terrific clients that allow us the privilege of working on such exceptional facilities. Together with our designers, material suppliers and subcontract partners, these owners have enabled us to build world-class healthcare facilities in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner through the creation of truly collaborative project teams. My sincere thanks goes to the men and women of these project teams for their hard work and dedication to their profession.”
Baptist South Medical Center South-Tower D features a 14-bed newborn intensive care unit, a 24-bed nursery, an additional 10 labor/delivery suites bringing the total to 22, 48 acute care beds, four intensive care beds, a new inpatient pharmacy and cardiology diagnostic area, along with an expansion of the existing central energy plant. The new addition contains approximately 222,000 square feet of new construction and renovation. It also includes the construction of a new 378,000-square-foot, 1,050-space parking structure. After construction of the main hospital was complete, the new tower was added immediately adjacent to the existing hospital, which remained fully operational during construction and required special sequencing of the work to ensure the existing hospital operations were not affected by the new construction. Baptist South Medical Center South Tower D also received an Excellence in Construction award in the Healthcare Category $25 to $99 million.
Haskell also received an award in the Healthcare Category $5 to $10 million for its work on the Emerson Medical Center in Jacksonville, a 37,000-square-foot medical office building for HealthAmerica and Shands Jacksonville. The medical office building includes a three-story shell building, stair tower and elevator chase. In addition to the design and construction of the building’s shell, Haskell also completed the first floor of the medical office building. Shands will use the space to operate a full-service imaging center that will serve University of Florida and community physicians.
In the Healthcare Category less than $5 million, Haskell was recognized for its work on the Baymeadows Primary Care center. The medical care center was completed in February 2010 by Haskell and the owner, Imam Investment Group, LLC.
For its work on the Ave Maria University Mega Dorm in the Florida town of Ave Maria, Haskell received a Merit Choice Award in the $10 to $25 million Commercial Division. The new women’s dormitory, which is 130,000 square feet and the largest to be constructed on the university’s campus, houses 552 students and six student life staff. The exterior of the dormitory is designed in Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie-style in keeping with the aesthetics of the existing Ave Maria University campus. Elements of the design style include copper roofs, wide overhangs and long horizontal lines. The dormitory features a central, four-level, open-air breezeway that engages the campus walkway system to foster a sense of connectivity and transparency.
The Excellence in Construction awards, which has become one of the premier competitions in the building and construction industry, recognizes outstanding construction projects around the nation.
