SHAWNEE, Kan. — Straub Construction of Kansas City was presented three “Excellence in Construction” (EIC) awards and the “President's Award for Best General Contractor” by the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) Heart of America Chapter.
Projects earning the prestigious EIC awards were: Entertainment Properties Trust, a $2.2 million project in Kansas City, Mo., in the renovation category; Goddard Unified School District 265, in Goddard Ks., in the $25 million and over commercial category; and the $5 million Holy Angels Catholic Church, Basehor, Ks., won in the institutional category. The Entertainment Properties Trust project went on to win the President's Award for Best Commercial Project.
When asked about the project, Entertainment Properties Trust President and CEO David Brain said, “The Straub team was able to complete the majority of our multi-million dollar job encompassing over 30,000 square feet in less than 10 weeks…We could not have asked for a better team. Everyone has been professional and very pleasant to work with. Straub has performed an extraordinary job, and has made Entertainment Properties Trust a very happy client.”
The three award-winning projects illustrate Straub Construction Company's diversity as a general contractor. Two are new construction and structural steel framed projects, each with challenges overcome, while the third involved constant changes involving the renovation of a historic space in an extremely tight timeframe.
Two of Straub's projects — Entertainment Properties Trust and Goddard USD 265 — are now being considered for national construction awards, coordinated by the ABC National organization. Straub Construction is celebrating their 90th anniversary in 2010 and has won other awards, including Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Top Ten Small Businesses, Kansas City, Ks. Small Business of the Year, Best Places to Work, Capstone awards and more.
“We know the importance of a good working relationship with the general contractor, and we have been very grateful for an excellent working relationship with Straub Construction Company,” said Charlie Edmonds, superintendent of Goddard USD 265. “We have enjoyed working with the Straub team, and hope we have an opportunity to do so again in the future.”
About the projects:
Goddard Schools: an 87,000 SF elementary school and a 128,000 SF middle school were constructed on a rapidly expanding campus. The biggest safety challenge with this project was an underground gas line located between the two job sites. Amenities include : three gymnasiums, locker rooms, reinforced storm shelters, computer labs, media center with radius wall, commercial kitchens, irrigation systems and more.
Entertainment Properties Trust: In just 11 weeks, the second floor, mezzanine, and third floor levels of historic 909 Walnut were transformed into 30,958 square foot of upscale office space. The overall goal was to keep history intact, yet make it “21st Century” through innovative design, state-of-the-art sound system and acoustics, cascading water feature, dramatic lighting, natural stone, and more.
Holy Angels Catholic Church: Built to currently accommodate 920 parishioners, this 21,230 square foot church is structural steel framed and has exposed timber framed roof structure. The ceiling consists of tongue-in-groove wood decking. Three pairs of 10-feet tall full-lite glass doors surround a storefront curtain wall. Perhaps the most prominent feature is the collective 13 large skylights covering the towers and extraordinary large skylights over the Alter.
