DENVER, Colo. — Kiewit-Turner, a joint venture, has begun mobilizing additional workers and equipment as construction activities intensify on the Department of Veterans Affairs’ medical center project.
The joint venture and the VA signed the contract on Nov. 11, Veterans Day. In December, more than 200 workers will be working on initial construction activities, including the demolition and renovation of existing buildings and the excavation of materials. That number will steadily increase to more than 1,000 workers during peak construction in the summer of 2013.
“Everyone on the Kiewit-Turner team is excited to be working with the VA on this important project for Colorado’s veterans,” said AJ Klebba, deputy managing partner, Kiewit-Turner. “As we ramp up our construction activities, the first thing the public will notice is a tremendous amount of excavation work. To prepare the site, we must remove more than 500,000 cubic yards of material. That is about 28,000 truckloads. Most of this work will be done at night to lighten the impact on the public.”
The new facility will replace the Denver Medical Center for the Eastern Colorado health care system and will be constructed at the Fitzsimons campus in Aurora, Colo. The 182-bed replacement medical center will include a 30-bed spinal cord injury/disease center, a 30-bed community living center, a research building, a central utility plant and parking structures.
