Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard recognizes Gilbane and the Major General Emmitt J. Bean Federal Center project team for their role in advancing sustainability in the city
Indianapolis, IN — Mayor Greg Ballard honored Gilbane Building Company and four other local organizations and businesses recently for their efforts in advancing sustainability in the city. The winners were announced at the 2012 Sustainability Awards luncheon hosted by living green expert Sara Snow at the Indianapolis Downtown Marriott.
The Major General Emmett J. Bean Federal Center, submitted by the General Services Administration (GSA), Shiel Sexton Company Inc., and Gilbane Building Company, was the winner in the Energy category. The Bean Federal Center was funded as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by setting sustainability goals for Federal agencies, as outlined in President Obama’s Executive Order 13423. The high performance roof, which incorporates 6,152 solar panels, a PV lab, and solar hot water collectors, will help reduce energy costs for the 1.6 million-square-foot building by about $500,000 per year.
“I am encouraged by the outstanding work of our field of applicants. With such strong community partners, my vision for Indianapolis to become one of the most sustainable cities in the Midwest moves closer to fruition,” said Mayor Ballard. “Each of our five winners was chosen for inspiring innovation, showcasing a positive community impact, demonstrating leadership and promoting education around the principles of sustainability.
Gilbane is ranked among the top five green contractors in the country according to Engineering News-Record and over 25% of its staff are LEED Accredited Professionals.
“Through our sustainability council and other programs, we are 100 percent committed to reducing the impact of facilities on our environment and helping our clients realize the life cycle cost savings that energy efficiency can achieve,” said Bob Stasia, Gilbane’s senior project executive in Indianapolis. “Clients like the GSA, which oversees a huge number of building projects nationwide, are setting a great example in terms of innovative ways to keep costs down while reducing energy consumption.”
The Indianapolis Sustainability Awards are presented annually by the City’s Office of Sustainability, the McKinney Green Initiatives Fund and the Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce. For more information about the Office of Sustainability, please visit www.indy.gov/sustainindy.
