Guthrie Healthcare, Gilbane-Welliver Break Ground on $146M Corning Hospital

CORNING, N.Y. — State and community leaders assembled recently to break ground on the future site of Guthrie Corning Hospital. With construction managed by a joint venture of Gilbane Building Co. and Welliver, the modern facility will feature 65 private rooms designed for patient comfort, privacy and safety. The new hospital is designed to be energy efficient and promote green operations.

“This project truly represents a new era in patient care for the residents of the region,” Hospital President Shirley Magana said at the event. “We appreciate the trust that the people of Corning and Steuben County have placed in Guthrie, as together we watch this dream of a new hospital become a reality.”

When open in summer of 2014, patients will benefit from an integrated campus designed for efficient delivery of quality care and increased outpatient services. The Guthrie Cancer Center Corning location will be on the first floor of the new hospital with a separate entrance for patients. The campus will also include an efficient emergency department with 18 treatment areas and an onsite helipad to quickly facilitate trauma patients or transfers.

“We are excited to be working with this team to build what promises to be a showcase of state-of-the-art healthcare,” said John LaRow, Gilbane’s Upstate New York district manager. “With aggressive energy efficiency goals and extensive plans to provide all of the modern amenities, Guthrie Corning Hospital will serve as a model of the next generation of healthcare.”

Gilbane-Welliver will provide pre-construction and construction management services for the new hospital. Hammes Company will serve as the owner representative for the project with Gould Turner Group serving as the designer. MEP engineering will be handled by Smith Seckman Reid with HUNT Architecture, Engineering and Land Surveyors as the civil engineer.
