Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority, Minnesota Vikings Announce Stadium Construction Manager

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority and the Minnesota Vikings announced Mortenson Construction has been chosen as the construction manager that will build a new multipurpose stadium. The announcement was made at a special meeting of the authority.

Final interviews and negotiations were conducted with two firms who submitted proposals: Hunt Construction, based in Scottsdale, Ariz. and Mortenson Construction based in Golden Valley, Minn.

“We received proposals from excellent construction companies, and we were lucky to have the best in the business bid on this project,” said Chair Michele Kelm-Helgen. “In the end, we have a great local team with Mortenson; they wanted this project and offered us very competitive terms. They have built over 100 sports and entertainment venues and are one of the most respected sports facilities builders in the United States.”

The new stadium is the largest construction project in the state of Minnesota. Mortenson estimates that the stadium construction project will take 4.25 million work hours and employ 7,500 workers. Key personnel working on the stadium project include :

  • John Wood: principal in charge
  • Brent Leiter: construction executive
  • Dave Mansell: general superintendent
  • Steve Laurila: senior project manager for the roof, structure, enclosure and operable elements for the stadium

For this project, Mortenson Construction has formed an association with Thor Construction. Thor is Minnesota's largest minority-owned business and has worked with Mortenson on numerous projects, including Target Field, TCF Bank Stadium and Xcel Energy Center.
