Strategic Maintenance Issues
Mike Vorster, Ph.D. will present three different sessions. His first session will be about “Strategic Maintenance Issues.” Preventive and condition-based maintenance are two actions in a spectrum of activities all of which affect the cost and reliability of a fleet. They cannot be optimized in isolation and must be consistent with policies regarding repair, rebuild and replace.

Equipment Metrics and Benchmarking
Vorster will also present on “Equipment Metrics and Benchmarking.” The session will discuss the complexities of metrics and benchmarking in the diverse and complex world of equipment management where few universal definitions, norms and standards exist. Fleet activity metrics, such as deployment and utilization, are discussed in detail as are input metrics, such as labor hours per operating hour and output metrics such as availability and reliability. Examples of each metric are presented and the session concludes by presenting creative and innovative ideas for presenting results in routine reports and management dashboards.

Equipment Transactions in the Balance Sheet and P&L
Lastly, Vorster will present a session titled “Equipment Transactions in the Balance Sheet and P&L.” This session is designed to provide equipment managers with the knowledge needed to understand these two critical company reports. The session will provide an overview of a typical construction company profit and loss statement and shows how equipment charges are handled in the various steps needed to calculate operating income and then turn to understanding the balance sheet. The session will wrap up by using knowledge of the P&L statement and the balance sheet to emphasize the importance of using capital both profitably and efficiently.

Proactive Maintenance Planning
Maintenance expert Ricky Smith, CMRP, will lead a session titled “Proactive Maintenance Planning.” This session will walk maintenance professionals through the top maintenance planning action items that must be completed to enable them to leave the reactive maintenance world and move into the proactive world.
