Brasfield & Gorrie and Florida Hospital laid the foundation for Florida Hospital for Women, making it the second largest foundation pour in Central Florida. The overnight pour involved 6,700 cubic yards of concrete transported by more than 100 concrete trucks that made 750 trips over a 12-hour period. The amount of rebar used to reinforce the foundation, laid end to end, would stretch from Orlando to Tampa. The project team conducted a 47,000-cubic-yard excavation prior to pouring the mat foundation, and 4,200 tons of recycled aggregate have been placed underneath the mat foundation. The foundation also includes more than 700 tons of reinforcing steel.
“Months of planning went into this event as we coordinated every detail, such as getting the concrete trucks to their locations and getting them out safety,” said Brasfield & Gorrie Division Manager Tim Johnson.
The project symbolizes a new era in women’s health. Florida Hospital is making an investment in women of all ages by putting the physicians and specialists they need under one roof. The 12-story, 400,000-square-foot facility will provide women access to world-class healthcare. Services will include OB/GYN, women’s surgery, maternal fetal medicine, neonatal intensive care, wellness and education, women’s cardiovascular care and cancer treatment.
As a symbol of Florida Hospital’s investment in women, the first round of concrete poured was dyed pink.
Brasfield & Gorrie is serving as general contractor of the $131-million project. Teaming with HKS Architects, construction began on the patient tower in January 2013. The project will be complete in 2015.
