Healthcare Design & Construction Hosts Tour of Innovation Lab Site in Newport Beach

Representatives from both Healthcare Design & Construction, LLC and Petra Integrated Construction Strategies, both subsidiaries of The Innovation Institute, in collaboration with the National Association of Women in Construction, hosted a tour of the new Innovation Lab in Newport Beach, California for a group of 39 female high school students from Orange County high schools.

Janice Ramsay-Gonzales, operations manager for HDC and member of NAWIC, coordinated the tour. She said, “This field trip is part of a week-long day camp held on the campus of Katella High School in Anaheim to introduce these young ladies to the opportunities in engineering, architecture, management, and the construction trades.” Today, only 9 percent of construction jobs are filled by women.

The 12,000-square-foot Innovation Lab space has been designed to accommodate both small and large groups as they strive to take new healthcare inventions to market. It includes a project development area, a simulation lab, small and large group collaboration areas, an ideation and deep dive work space, and an exhibit space. Lab completion is scheduled for September 2014.

Funds have been raised from construction companies like HDC to cover the costs involved with the day camp. Therefore, these students were able to attend free of charge. Additional support has been provided by Innovation Lab subcontractors Mammoth Electric, Inc.; Meyer and Reeder, Inc. and B & B Plumbing, Inc. Other major donors included Clark Construction Group, United Rentals, GMU Geotechnical, American Concrete Institute and Valley Crest Landscape Companies.
