McCarthy Sponsors ASC Design-Build Competition for Construction, Engineering Students

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. recently sponsored the Associated Schools of Construction 2014 Student Competition for the Great Lakes Region in the category of Design-Build. In this annual competition, teams of students from up to 12 regional universities are presented with a construction project/problem and must prepare a presentation to “win the job” and present it 24 hours later. McCarthy’s construction professionals developed the challenge based on a project and judged the student entries.

The project for this year’s competition was a Midwestern urban mixed-use development. Teams were judged on various criteria, including prequalification submission, concept design from an RFP, cost estimate, scheduling, written proposal and oral presentation.

The winners for Region 3 were:

  • 1st place – Milwaukee School of Engineering
  • 2nd place – Indiana State University
  • 3rd place – Ball State University

McCarthy has been sponsoring the design-build competition for nearly a decade.

“Design-build continues to gain momentum nationally as a delivery method that strengthens early collaboration and delivers positive results,” explained Ryan Freeman, McCarthy Central Division director of business development.

“This competition offers students a wonderful opportunity, as it provides them with a condensed version of a real-world pursuit. They are exposed to the key components of a traditional design-build competitive process, working to accomplish in 24 hours what we in the industry normally do in weeks or even months. The students this year represented some of the top talent in their class from the premier construction and engineering programs in the country — just the type of talent we are looking for in our industry. Congratulations to this year’s top teams and all participants for their outstanding efforts.”
