Because of his special ties to Atlanta baseball, American Builders 2017 and the Atlanta Braves invited Morris to kick off the brick work on the new stadium in a private ceremony on Thursday, Aug 27. After Morris “buttered” and laid the first brick, additional bricks were laid by Atlanta Braves and SunTrust executives, Cobb County officials, American Builders 2017 representatives and Atlanta Braves First Baseman Freddie Freeman. Baseball legend Hank Aaron joined in the celebration, as well.
In total, SunTrust Park will feature 450,000 modular bricks with an additional 330,000 bricks being set in the architectural precast panels that will adorn the exterior of the stadium. These materials weigh more than 750 tons.
A time capsule containing a signed ball, dirt from Fulton County Stadium and Turner Field, tickets from Hank Aaron's last game, World Series pins and other memorabilia was also placed into an exterior wall during the ceremony.
