Sundt Celebrates Completion of Hausman Road Improvement Project

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Sundt Construction, Inc. recently celebrated the completion of the city of San Antonio, Texas’ first Design-Build road improvement project during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Hausman Road.

The major thoroughfare connects Loop 1604 to Interstate 10. The project also incorporated two Bexar County road projects at two stages of design and all public utilities work along the roadway. This is the largest road improvement project approved by voters in the 2012 City of San Antonio Bond Program, and the project included funding from Bexar County. Sundt partnered with AECOM (formerly URS Corporation) and Civil Engineering Consultants to form the Design-Build team for the $74-million project.

For the past three years, the project team has converted 3.4 miles of two-lane road to four lanes with a median. Other improvements include San Antonio Water System, CPS Energy and AT&T utility upgrades throughout the route, five bridges, left turn lanes, curbs, driveway approaches, drainage improvements, traffic signals, flood control measures, and water quality systems in compliance with Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone requirements. Additionally, there are several features for pedestrians and cyclists, including sidewalks, bike lanes and hike and bike trails connected to the Leon Creek Greenway.

The Design-Build approach enabled the team to make suggestions to the original plans that led to significant cost savings and project improvements. For example, the bicycle plans were changed from two lanes on either side of the roadway to one 10-foot-wide, shared-use bicycle/pedestrian path along one side of the road, separated from vehicles. The new path is safer and connects more easily to the city’s hiking and biking trails. Suggestions from the Design-Build team yielded nearly $3 million in savings.
