Atkinson/Clark, a joint venture of Guy F. Atkinson Construction and Clark Construction Group, recently began on the Otay Mesa Land Port of Entry Modernization and Expansion project. Being developed by the U.S. General Services Administration, the project will help modernize and expand California’s busiest commercial truck border crossing to address dramatic growth in traffic volumes.
One of three ports of entry for commercial and pedestrian travelers between San Diego and Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, the Otay Mesa Land Port of Entry processes 1 million trucks, 6.6 million vehicles, 3.6 million pedestrian travelers, $18 billion worth of exports and $34 billion worth of imports each year.
To ease congestion, the project will double the processing capacity of the pedestrian inspection facility from six to 12 lanes and increase commercial inspection booths from 10 to 16.
In order to accommodate growing processing needs, the project team will also construct new tenant agency buildings, transfer the hazardous materials importation process from the export facility to the import facility, refresh and renovate existing office spaces, construct a new employee parking structure, establish a USDA-funded plant inspection station and extend the northbound pedestrian bridge to increase accessibility to the Regional Transit Center. The 51-acre port site will expand by 10 acres to house these updated facilities.
Once complete, the project will provide the port with adequate operational space, reduced traffic congestion and a more efficient layout for port operations and the traveling public.
Construction of the Otay Mesa LPOE is slated to be completed in 2023. Gruen Associates and Jones Studio Inc. serve as the project architects.
