Indianapolis Public Schools Partners with Students Interested in Working on $410M Project

High school students wanting to learn about becoming an architect, accountant, designer or work in HVAC or construction, can spend a few months imbedded with Indianapolis firms on one of the largest K-12 redevelopment projects in the nation.

As a component of its $410-million Rebuilding Stronger initiative, Indianapolis Public Schools has developed a groundbreaking partnership aimed at equipping students for the workforce. The IPS Workforce and Career Development project, a strategic collaboration forged through an open review process, is set to immerse students in the realms of architecture, engineering and construction professions. Under Rebuilding Stronger, about 22 schools will be upgraded along with several athletic fields as the district reimagines education for its 31,000 students.

Under the leadership of Robin Winston, head of Winston/Terrell Group, a minority-owned government affairs firm, this initiative seeks to provide students with hands-on experiences and exposure to real-world challenges, propelling them toward successful career paths.

Winston’s firm, in tandem with Black Onyx Management, will oversee the coordination of supplier diversity outreach and support efforts, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive approach to workforce development. The project, spearheaded by career development leadership across four district-managed high schools, is set to review applications from students genuinely interested in exploring careers in architecture, engineering and construction.

The ultimate objective is to place at least one student with each IPS partner in these fields over the next few months. This strategic collaboration signifies IPS’s commitment to fostering a skilled workforce, bridging the gap between education and industry and preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of the modern workforce.
