El Camino Health, Mountain View Campus Women’s Hospital Expansion Enhances Delivery of Women’s Health Services

Improvements and expansion of the Orchard Pavilion at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, California are now complete. The three-story, 210,000-square-foot project significantly enhances the hospital’s capacity to deliver specialized women’s health services while maintaining uninterrupted patient care throughout construction. The project team included general contractor Truebeck and architect HDR.

The OSHPD 1 expansion is dedicated entirely to mother-baby health and women’s hospital functions, including labor and delivery with surgical capability, post natal care and a neonatal intensive care unit to support mothers and babies through pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum.

The general contractor provided both preconstruction and construction services, leveraging the firm’s construction innovation and technology team to support advanced coordination, complex phasing and cost- and schedule-saving strategies. Working within an active hospital environment, Truebeck also self-performed critical scopes including infection control, temporary construction walls and barriers and headwall installation, ensuring seamless integration with existing hospital operations.

Because construction occurred adjacent to occupied clinical spaces, the project required stringent Infection Control Risk Assessment Class IV protocols. Construction zones were maintained under negative pressure, with full dust containment, vestibules equipped with sticky mats and carpets and dedicated labor resources assigned to continuous cleaning and barrier maintenance. All work in occupied spaces utilized purpose-built dust-containment systems, with ICRA requirements carefully managed based on the scope and intensity of work.

The project also includes a new cafeteria as part of the overall building improvements. This space features a back-of-house preparation area, café and seating connected directly to the hospital lobby, enhancing amenities for patients, visitors and staff.
