Fun with Foam at TCC Aviation Center

Tulsa Community College Aviation Center, Tulsa, Oklahoma, recently filmed the test of the fire suppression system using foam at its newest location. The facility is being renovated to house TCC’s Aviation Sciences academic programs:

• Air Traffic Control
• Aviation Management
• Aviation Logistics

GH2 Architects is providing the design work and Flintco is serving as the construction manager. There are several unique design elements in converting the existing airplane hangar to a modern TCC campus and aviation program headquarters. The project uses a state-of-the-art fire suppression system that can quickly dispense foam fire suppression, LED lights throughout the facility and a sustainable, energy-efficient HVAC system.

The center is approximately 55,000 square feet and will be home to TCC’s fleet of technically advanced aircraft, a $1.4-million air traffic control simulator and a full-motion flight training simulator.

In addition to offering classes in the Aviation Science degree program, TCC will offer general education classes at the location. The renovation of the hangar and additional classroom space provides an opportunity for expansion to meet the needs of the workforce industry and to prepare Tulsa area students for employment in various aviation-related career fields.

TCC averages nearly 40 graduates a year during the past four years in the Aviation Sciences academic programs.

The TCC Aviation Center has been a long-term project beginning with the purchase of the facility in 2012. Construction and demolition started in March 2015 and the college plans to move into the new location at the beginning of 2016. The renovation of the building is projected to total roughly $3.7 million.
