BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Waste Management has awarded Brasfield & Gorrie and CEO Jim Gorrie its 2013 Sustainability Circle of Excellence Award, which recognizes outstanding diversion and recycling achievement in the construction industry.
The award is given to the companies who diverted the highest total tonnage for recycling in 2013, as measured by Waste Management's online Diversion and Recycling Tracking tool. Brasfield & Gorrie achieved an 89 percent diversion rate in 2013, landing the company in this group of environmentally conscious contractors and representing more than a 10 percent increase over the company's 2012 diversion rate.
“This award underscores Brasfield & Gorrie's commitment to environmental stewardship, which is one of our core values,” said Brasfield & Gorrie Chief Operating Officer Jeff Stone.
“Right now, construction waste makes up about 143 million tons — or about 40 percent — of the U.S. waste streams each year,” said David Steiner, president and CEO for Waste Management. “There's a tremendous opportunity to recycle those materials, and Brasfield & Gorrie is a company that's leading the way for those green building practices.”
This award represents Brasfield & Gorrie's second national recognition for sustainability efforts, as the company also received Waste Management's 2012 Sustainability Circle of Excellence Award.
