Mortenson Construction Celebrates Project Milestone at HARBORCENTER

Mortenson JulyeNews Topping-off-HCMortenson Construction and partners Buffalo Sabres, Populous and ICON Venue Group, took part in a ceremonial “topping off” of the structural steel on the ice rink and parking ramp at HARBORCENTER in Downtown Buffalo, New York.

Five months after erection of the structural steel commenced, the final beam was swung into place amidst a crowd of onlookers. “Today is the result of a tremendous effort by the entire HARBORCENTER team. With completion of this milestone, our team is poised to focus all their efforts on the enclosure and finishes of this landmark facility,” said Kendall Nielsen, construction executive at Mortenson Construction.

To date, ironworkers have spent 15,009 hours installing 1,950 tons of steel on the project; the vast majority of which was put in place on the upper three floors of the eight-floor structure. The lower five floors house a concrete parking ramp.

Upon completion, HARBORCENTER will offer patrons a two-rink community hockey center set atop a 900-car parking ramp along with space for a destination restaurant, retail shops and a 205-key Marriott Hotel. It is projected to draw 500,000 visitors annually.

The ice rinks and the parking structure will be open in fall 2014 and the hotel will open in spring 2015.
