Gilbane Building Company has received a CMAA Project Achievement Award for its Construction Management of the Science Building at John Tyler Community College in Midlothian, Va. The award was given in the category of buildings, new construction with a constructed value of less than $30 million. The owner is Virginia Community College System.
The first building in the Virginia Community College System to achieve LEED (Silver) certification, this 60,000-square-foot facility houses many student resources, including classrooms, computer and science labs, an expanded library, and a bookstore, with sustainable features ranging from a green roof to diversion and recycling of more than 90 percent of all construction waste.
Gilbane helped the client cut one month from an already aggressive schedule, then adhere to that schedule through management of interim milestones. Through an effective value engineering process, Gilbane also enabled the owner to choose several significant additions to the project scope.
A total of 15 awards were announced during the Association's Industry Recognition Banquet on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at the National Conference & Trade Show in San Diego, CA.
“Congratulations to our standout projects. The number and quality of projects that were submitted this year sets the bar very high for what is expected to yield a successful project,” Judges Mark Ballard, PE, and Brian Koches, CCM concurred.
Since 1999, these awards have been presented to projects that exemplify the contributions of professional Construction and Program Management to the successful completion of a challenging project or program. More than 130 entries were submitted for this year's program. Pictures are available upon request.
