January Construction Starts Jump 12 Percent

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The value of new construction starts in January climbed 12 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $690.2 billion, according to Dodge Data & Analytics. After losing momentum during last year’s fourth quarter, nonresidential building strengthened in January, with much of the lift coming from the start of the $3.4-billion Central Terminal Building at LaGuardia Airport in New York, New York,as well as groundbreaking for several other large airport terminal projects. More Than 170 Top Construction Pros to Compete at ABC’s National Craft Championships

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Associated Builders and Contractors announced that more than 170 of the top construction apprentices and trainees in the country will compete in the 30th annual National Craft Championships, March 1-2 during ABC’s Workforce Week ‘17. Competitors from 27 states will contend for gold, silver and bronze medals and a safety award in 13 competitions representing 11 crafts. The two-day competition includes a written exam and a hands-on, practical test where competitors will demonstrate their high-level craftsmanship and safety best practices. Architecture Billings Slip Modestly

WASHINGTON, D.C. –The Architecture Billings Index dipped slightly into negative territory in January*, after a very strong showing in December. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate 9-12-month lead time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects reported the January ABI score was 49.5, down from a score of 55.6 in the previous month. This score reflects a minor decrease in design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings).
