NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. — Balfour Beatty Campus Solutions, LLC, announced that it has reached financial close on a new graduate and family student housing project at the University of Nevada, Reno. Balfuor Beatty and its partners will design, build and finance the approximately $22-million development, which has already commenced with demolition activity and is expected to open in August 2014. The project is being designed by BLT Architects and will be built by Balfour Beatty Construction. Architecture Billings Index Surges Higher

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Showing a steady increase in the demand for design services, the Architecture Billings Index continues to accelerate, as it reached its second highest level of the year. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate 9-12 month lead time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects reported the September ABI score was 54.3, up from a mark of 53.8 in August.   This score reflects an increase in design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Bencardino Excavating has begun work on an expansion project of Temple University’s research building at 12th and Norris Streets in North Philadelphia. The project includes the excavation and installation of steam and chilled water lines and a new manhole for access to underground infrastructure systems.
