AISC Releases New Seismic Standard for Existing Steel Buildings
A new standard, Seismic Provisions for Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Structural Steel Buildings (ANSI/AISC 342-22), is now available as a free download from aisc.org/standards. The AISC Committee on Specifications developed and approved the document as a revision to the structural steel provisions in the 2017 edition of ASCE/SEI 41, Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings. The next release of that standard will likely adopt ANSI/AISC 342-22 in chapter 9. The document is free to download; a printed version will be available for purchase from aisc.org/publications this summer.
2022 AISC Code of Standard Practice for Steel Buildings and Bridges Now Available
The American Institute of Steel Construction has released the latest revision of one of its flagship standards, the Code of Standard Practice for Steel Buildings and Bridges (ANSI/AISC 303-22). The document is now available as a free download at aisc.org/2022code. “The 2022 AISC Code of Standard Practice is the result of a tremendous effort by the committee over the last six years,” said Babette Freund, chair of the AISC Committee on the Code of Standard Practice. “Of special note is the work of a joint task group that harmonized terminology and coordinated requirements between the 2022 AISC Code and the … Read more
AISC Celebrates Earth Day with Updated EPDs
To help celebrate Earth Day, the domestic structural steel industry has issued updated environmental product declarations to help designers and building owners design more environmentally friendly buildings and bridges. The American Institute of Steel Construction develops industry-average EPDs for three products: fabricated hot-rolled structural sections, fabricated steel plate, and fabricated hollow structural sections, with the latter developed in conjunction with the Steel Tube Institute. These documents are designed to facilitate an accurate, apples-to-apples comparison of the structural materials on the market today. The EPDs illustrate what the industry has achieved through decades of innovation. “Many people associate steel with old … Read more
Industry Experts Release Recommended Guidance on Design Assist vs. Delegated Design
Over the past few years, the American Institute of Architects and the American Institute of Steel Construction have worked together to study design collaboration techniques commonly used in the construction industry. As a result of this joint effort, the AIA and AISC have published a paper titled “Design Collaboration on Construction Projects. Delegated Design, Design Assist, and Informal Involvement – What Does it all Mean?” Along the way, the AIA and AISC discovered the terms “design assist” and “delegated design,” while commonly used in the industry, often mean different things to different people. These differences often result in differing expectations … Read more
