Data Center Launches Fatality Map Dashboard

To continue raising awareness of construction hazards and the need for improved safety in the industry, CPWR’s Data Center has developed the Construction Fatality Map Dashboard. It builds on the Construction Fatality Maps, which were launched in 2011 to support the National Campaign to Prevent Falls in Construction. The new dashboard combines data from OSHA fatality investigations and online media sources gathered since 2011. It allows computer or mobile device users to search construction fatalities by four filters: Year, Event Type (major categories such as falls), State and Date.

Quarterly Data Report Analyzes Construction Falls

The new Quarterly Data Report focuses on falls, which remain the most common cause of fatal injuries in the construction industry. In 2017, 389 workers died from falls, 367 from falls to a lower level. Encouragingly, the rate of fatal falls showed signs of decreasing among roofers, the occupation with the highest risk of falls, and among construction laborers, the largest occupation in the industry. Small employers (those with fewer than 20 employees) accounted for 75% of fatal falls between 2015 and 2017, despite making up only 39% of construction payroll employment. The National Campaign to Prevent Falls in Construction: March 21 Webinar

Falls are the top cause of construction fatalities and account for one-third of on-the-job injuries and deaths in the industry. In 2012, CPWR, NIOSH and OSHA together launched a national construction fall prevention campaign. An hour-long webinar scheduled for March 21 will bring together leaders from all three organizations to showcase the past successes of the campaign and its major event, the National Safety Stand-Down, as well as to highlight plans for 2018.
