WASHINGTON, D.C. – Associated Builders and Contractors has named Scott Walters of Belding, Michigan, superintendent at Dan Vos Construction Co., its 2016 Craft Professional of the Year.
“Scott demonstrates an uncompromising commitment to safety, the professional development of his colleagues, the highest quality of construction and the satisfaction of his clients,” said 2016 ABC National Chair David Chapin, president of Willmar Electric Service, Lincoln, Nebraska. “Scott is a tremendous ambassador for the construction industry through his dedication to his job and his community, and ABC is thrilled to honor him.”
“I really respect the fact that Scott is watching out for our younger people, training them and making sure they understand what it means to do things the Dan Vos way,” said Dan Vos, president and CEO of Dan Vos Construction, Ada, Michigan. “Our people trust in him and want to work hard for him. He truly cares about people, and wants to see them succeed. Scott is a perfect example of living out the merit shop philosophy; this award couldn’t be more fitting.”
ABC presents the Craft Professional of the Year award to a construction craft professional who excels in his or her field while also demonstrating a commitment to safety, training and the merit shop philosophy each year. As the 2016 Craft Professional of the Year, Walters received a brand new 2016 Ram Tradesman Crew Cab truck from the award’s exclusive sponsor, Tradesmen International, with custom upgrades donated by ABC business partner Ram Commercial.
Walters began his career at Dan Vos Construction Company as a carpenter in 1988 and has grown into his current role as onsite supervisor. He has led many award-winning projects over the course of his career, including Gordon Food Service’s North American Headquarters in Wyoming, Michigan; BISSELL Inc.’s Innovation Center in Walker, Michigan; Spectrum Health Cancer Center in Reed City, Michigan and multiple projects for Perrigo Company. Over the last five years, he has supervised more than $99 million in construction without any lost-time incidents, an excellent safety record.
His community involvement includes volunteering in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids, which provides free emotional care to children and adults coping with cancer or the loss of a loved one. Walters also donates work to St. Patrick’s Church School in Parnell, Michigan, and serves on the board of directors of the Lowell Youth Football League.
Walters was selected from among four finalists, all of whom received a tool kit from Bosch.
