Lendlease Opens El Camino College’s New Playing Field

TORRANCE, Calif. – Lendlease received temporary certificate of occupancy of the new Kinesiology and Fitness Complex at El Camino College, Torrance, California, just in time for the 2016 Commencement Ceremony.

Lendlease managed the construction of the new Kinesiology and Fitness Complex which included the replacement of the deteriorating Murdock Stadium, originally built in 1949. This project included the construction of a modern stadium to support the college’s outstanding athletic programs and kinesiology classes.

The new complex includes a 7,869-seat stadium, an NCAA-certified nine-lane running track, synthetic turf fields for both football and soccer and various support facilities. The neighboring practice field project, completed in 2013 also includes shotput, discus throwing and synthetic turf to complement.

Communication and technology upgrades include:

  • Site-wide Wi-Fi coverage, bringing connectivity to the field
  • Wireless radio/coach communications linking to the press box
  • Field-accessible power and communication boxes for tapping in audio visual systems for special events and staging needs

A substantial amount of soil was removed from the project; at peak, crews reached a rate of 100 trucks exiting the site each day. Recycling of construction and demolition debris was maximized: 12,000 tons of debris was hauled from the site, but 99.3 percent of this was recycled and diverted.
