URBANA, Ohio – District officials and Gilbane Building Company recently hosted a community event for the dedication and official ribbon cutting of the new Urbana PK-8 school located in Urbana, Ohio. The new facility is the second building to be completed this year, following the opening of the new high school in the spring. The modern, state-of-the-art buildings support the district’s efforts to encourage academic development and growth through collaboration.
Spanning over 180,000 square feet, the new PK-8 school includes two gymnasiums, a cafeteria, two playgrounds, a softball field and a multi-purpose athletic field. Learning studios replace the traditional concept of classrooms creating learning communities within each grade. These studios have modular features such as garage doors and partitions that offer the ability to flexibly configure rooms for collaborative learning.
Gilbane served as construction manager at-risk for the $67.3-million project, which included the elementary/middle school to house the PK-8 student population with a projected enrollment of 1,527 students. The project also included the new 87,000 square-foot high school that houses approximately 480 students in grades 9-12. Both buildings were designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.
