The PCL family of companies has received its first International Living Future Institute’s Petal Certification for the Calgary Zoo’s Panda Passage, located in Alberta, Canada.
The Petal Certification, from the ILFI Living Building Challenge, makes it the most advanced constructed habitat in the world. The Panda Passage is the first-ever Petal-certified project for PCL and the first in Alberta; it is also the second zoo facility to receive the certification. Focused on innovation and sustainability, the Living Building Challenge provides guidelines for design and construction that promote the relationship between people and the environment.
Based on the ILFI and the Living Building Challenge’s commitment to sustainable construction, the Petal Certification requires contractors meet all criteria for at least three of the seven petal categories, including water, energy, health and happiness, materials, equity and beauty. The Panda Passage met four of the prerequisite petals to receive its certification in the beauty, materials, health and happiness and equity categories.
Beginning in October 2016, the Panda Passage project included the renovation of an existing building and a new back-of-house area, creating a home for four pandas as part of the Chinese Panda program. The Panda Passage project was completed in May 2018 by PCL’s Special Projects Division.
