PORR S.A. and the Polish General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways signed a contract for Design-Build project for the S16 expressway Olsztyn-Ełk, in the section from Borki Wielkie to Mrągowo. The 13-kilometer-long expressway section will be built within a three-year period along with the construction of the Mrągowo ring road. The contract is worth around EUR 115m.
The contract covers the design and construction of a dual-carriageway express road running from Borki Wielkie to Mrągowo with two lanes in each direction, paved over with asphalt, as well as Mrągowo’s ring road. Some sections will be realized as single-carriageway roads conforming to the Polish “GP class” (fast traffic trunk roads). The contract also provides for the construction of retention basins, animal crossings, noise barriers and crash barriers.
The new road section will run near the cities Borki Wielkie, Sorkwity, Nowe Bagienice, Marcinkowo and will only be accessible via the interchanges Sorkwity, Bagienice and Mrągowo. Mrągowo’s ring road will allow drivers to bypass the city on its southeast side, significantly reducing transit traffic.
The services will be rendered within 36 months of the contract signing. The completion of the project is planned for the fourth quarter of 2023. Design works will start after signing the contract; road construction works are set to begin in the second half of 2021. The S16 plays an important role in the transport system of the entire region and is therefore often called the “backbone” of Warmia and Mazury.
