New Terminal 3 at Lhasa Gongga International Airport Largest, Most Important China Aviation Hub

Built by CSCEC, Terminal 3 at Lhasa Gongga International Airport has officially been put into operation. Terminal 3 is one of highest airports in the world, serving as the largest and most important aviation hub in China. It will greatly enhance the capacity of Lhasa Gongga International Airport, as well as improve the travel experience of passengers.

The terminal 3 building of Lhasa Gongga International Airport has a total construction area of about 88,000 square meters, including 56,000 square meters of steel structure, with a total of 10,000 tons of steel members used.

During the construction, by using the stone powder and air-entraining agent, which are abundant in the local area, C50 self-compacting concrete was prepared for the first time in Tibet. This solved the shortage of concrete admixtures such as fly ash, mineral powder and silica fume; and in the process of pouring C50 self-compacting concrete in all 12 steel columns for lifting the roof, special pumping jack-up technology was adopted. This prevented the quality defects of unconsolidated concrete holes in steel tube columns under a plateau environment.

In the winter, with low temperature, snow melts slowly under normal lighting. Since the sunlight can’t reach the concave part of the building roof, the melted snow can easily freeze again, thus blocking the drainage channel, resulting in leakage risk and increasing the roof load. Electric heating cables in the gutter were installed, so that data related to temperature, humidity and snow amount can be collected by temperature detectors, humidity detectors and video monitoring equipment, and the heating power can be intelligently adjusted to effectively melt the ice and snow in the gutter.
