‘Ice Cube’ Sports Center Unveiling Planned for Beijing Winter Olympics

As the only underground supporting facility of the Winter Olympics, the China State Construction-built ice sports center will be used in conjunction with the “ice cube” events during the Beijing Winter Olympics in China. At present, the construction of the ice sports center has entered the final stage, which will be opened simultaneously during the test competition of the Beijing Winter Olympics in October.

The ice sports center is located on the ground floor of the south square of the Beijing National Aquatics Center, with a total construction area of 8,821 square meters. After its completion, it will become an ice sports platform integrating ice events, skating fitness, ice training, sports tourism and ice performances.

Based on the concept of green Olympic Games, passive architecture is adopted in the design. By means of a large lighting well with a diameter of 13 meters at the top and several light pipes, outdoor light is introduced to realize natural lighting in the ice sports center, which will save 26,000 degrees of electricity every year. Currently, the ice pipe bracket in the ice sports center has been paved, and it has entered the preliminary preparation stage of ice making.

Ninety-five percent of the project has been completed, with full completion expected by end of September.

The ice sports center will be used as an auxiliary for the Beijing Winter Olympic Games during the competition. As an important heritage of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, the ice sports center will retain its functions permanently after the Winter Olympics, and will be used for training and experience of ice sports, and to be an important carrier for promoting ice sports to teenagers. By then, the Water Cube will become the only double Olympic venue with ice and water sports service capabilities in China. After being put into operation, it is expected to receive more than 100,000 ice sports lovers for exercise and fitness every year.
