Swinerton has completed the closing-in phase of construction for the new six-story DOCS Surgical Hospital in Los Angeles, California. Designed by Cuningham Group, the project is expected to be complete in late 2026. The hospital will feature advanced operating theaters, robotic surgical technology and specialized imaging centers to improve efficiency and outcomes.
With the building now enclosed, upcoming work includes the start of interior metal stud framing, placement of concrete for the slab-on-grade and continued installation of site utilities and underground tanks. Additionally, steel erection of the porte-cochere will soon be underway, further shaping the facility’s arrival experience and advancing the project toward full build-out.
The project site presents unique logistical challenges due to its restricted footprint and location in a densely populated residential neighborhood. With property lines on all four sides and no perimeter space for a tower crane, the man hoist and crane were positioned at the center of the building footprint. Safety measures, including K-rails, covered walkways and fencing were installed along the perimeter; an emergency egress path was integrated to ensure compliance and safety in the event of a disaster.
Open communication has been maintained with neighboring property management to minimize disruptions. Deteriorated asphalt in the adjacent alleyway will be replaced as part of a good-faith agreement with the city. The existing single-story hospital adjacent to the new facility was demolished in early 2025 to create a surface parking lot, following compliance with AB 2190 seismic regulations.
