Clark Builders — a division of Turner Construction Company — has been awarded a contract by Alberta Infrastructure to lead the Red Deer Regional Hospital expansion and renovation project. This project represents a significant investment in healthcare infrastructure and will address the growing needs of the central Alberta, Canada community. DIALOG is serving as architectural partner.
The project involves the construction of a new patient tower and extensive renovations to the existing Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre. The new tower will add 200 inpatient beds, increasing the facility’s total capacity to 570 beds. It will feature six new operating rooms, cardiac catheterization labs, an endoscopy unit, an inpatient renal dialysis unit and an expanded medical device reprocessing department. A new power plant building will also be constructed to support the hospital’s updated infrastructure.
The later phases of the project will include renovations to the existing hospital, including an expanded emergency department, reconfigured loading docks, a renovated and expanded intensive care unit and upgrades to various other departments.
The general contractor will complete early site preparation for the expansion and renovation project, and by early 2025, construction will begin on the new patient tower. The phased approach ensures ongoing hospital services will experience minimal disruption, allowing the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre to continue providing critical care to its patients throughout the construction period.
The comprehensive redevelopment will address capacity issues, which have resulted in approximately 30% of patients in the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre catchment area seeking specialized care in Edmonton or Calgary. Upon completion, the expanded and renovated facilities will reduce the need for patient transfers and ensure Alberta residents have access to high-quality healthcare closer to home.
