The signing of the construction team agreement between Kadans Science Partner, and BAM Bouw en Techniek, officially marked the start of construction on the innovative transition building “The Bridge” at Utrecht Science Park in the Netherlands. Arcadis is serving as structural engineer and consultant for installations & BREEAM and cepezed as architects.
The Bridge is being built on the shell of the former Earth Sciences building and will initially house institutes such as the Institute for Biodynamics and Biocomplexity, the Institute of Environmental Biology and part of the Bijvoet Centre during the renovation of the Kruyt Building. Afterward, the building will house companies and institutes with a focus on sustainability.
The redevelopment of the existing building, led by Kadans Science Partner as developer, is a prime example of sustainability. By reusing the existing concrete structure, 1.4 million kilos of CO₂ emissions will be saved, equivalent to the emissions from 200 car trips around the world. Construction work will begin in 2026 with the modification of the current structure and the addition of two new floors. The plan is for future occupants to move into the approximately 20,000-square-meter building starting in October 2027.
