The $10.8-million renovation of the Graduate Medical Education facility at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida is complete. Spanning 28,250 square feet, the project transformed a hospital space on the first floor previously occupied by radiology offices into a modern hub designed to house the largest GME program in South Florida that will educate, train and support the region’s physician workforce.
Over the course of 14 months, Skanska served as general contractor for the healthcare construction project leading a renovation that included the full interior demolition and rebuild of the first-floor space. The work encompassed the relocation and reconfiguration of all mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, along with the addition of new infrastructure to support the program’s advanced needs.
The renovated facility now features administrative offices, classrooms; a conference room; resident lounges; on-call rooms with private, individual bathrooms; as well as a wellness room and library. To support the comprehensive renovation of these spaces that will now focus on medical education, the project included the installation of three new air handling units, upgraded electrical panels, structural steel reinforcements and a comprehensive access control and security system.
The project was completed in full compliance with ADA standards and the healthcare act requirements. With this renovation, Broward Health strengthens its capacity to provide exceptional graduate medical education opportunities, advancing both the healthcare workforce and quality of care in the region.
