The joint venture led by Skanska, along with New South Construction, FS360 and Synergy Construction, has been selected to construct five additional gates at the north end of Concourse T at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (Hartsfield-Jackson) in Georgia. In addition to building the gates, the joint venture will also rebuild a major portion of the North Terminal exit road, construct a Delta Air Lines ground support equipment facility and a fire station, as well as oversee relocations to the utilities’ infrastructure. Vertical Construction Grows Tall at New Australian Embassy Building

In downtown Washington, D.C., vertical construction is underway at the Australian Embassy’s new chancery after a year-long effort onsite to remove the existing building and excavate the below-grade structure. Built by Clark Construction and designed by Bates Smart, the 220,000-square-foot chancery will feature a custom curtainwall system and expansive interior glass atrium, as well as open assembly spaces, an exhibition gallery, event spaces and offices. Construction Seasons Begin at Antarctic Research Hub

A 20-person-plus team is working on the second season of building a new science and operations building located in Antarctica. Construction can only take place during a short window during the Antarctic summer months, avoiding the harsh, dark winter. This season, the team aims to complete the pre-cast concrete foundations, ground floor slab, rock anchors and stub columns, as well as drainage and the perimeter wall, before returning in December to complete the outer structure. McDonald’s Flagship-Disney Aims for Net-Zero Status

The McDonald’s Flagship-Disney, located in Orlando, Florida, recently completed construction, and aims to become the first net-zero restaurant in the quick-service industry. Under a shed clad in solar panels, the 8,024-square-foot restaurant, built by Southland Construction and designed by Ross Barney Architects, was envisioned and developed in response to the Florida climate. Energy consumption is reduced by optimizing building and kitchen systems. Energy is generated onsite by 18,727 square feet of photovoltaic panels, 4,809 square feet of glazing integrated photovoltaic panels and 25 off-the-grid parking lot lights produce more energy than the restaurant uses.
