On the $25-million Bellvue Water Treatment Plant – Package B project, Hensel Phelps built a virtual as-built of the project through the use of laser scanning technology. The virtual as-built was used to provide the owner, the city of Greeley, an exact replica of the plant for future use. Hensel Phelps also used the virtual as-built model to print a physical model (pictured above). The physical model provides an exact replica of what was built for a more traditional view that does not require a computer. Laser scanning can be performed as the project progresses, and can be utilized for … Read more
NCCER Enhances Testing with Automated Remote Proctoring
Module testing with The National Center for Construction Education and Research is available at any time and from any location with automated remote proctoring. Partnering with Invigulus, an online remote proctoring platform, this updated technology allows students to take tests at their convenience. In addition, it allows instructors to assign tests without the worry of coordinating times and locations. While students can take tests remotely through automated remote proctoring, the integrity of the test will still be maintained through student identity confirmation and webcam monitoring. Video recording during a testing session helps flag any suspicious activity or behavior. This information … Read more
‘Didge’ AI Platform Provides Cost-Efficient Tool for Project Management, Safety Monitoring + Progress Tracking
Gilbane Building Company and Nextera Robotics have entered into a joint-venture partnership to develop a transformational artificial intelligence platform that utilizes a fleet of autonomous mobile robots to track construction progress and provide safety monitoring at jobsites. The new robotics platform dubbed “Didge” provides autonomous “eyes-on-site” 24/7 by obtaining detailed visual data at construction sites, creating a bridge to the field between design models, digital twins and plans, while also boosting transparency, monitoring safety and expediting progress tracking. The platform is designed to be customizable and multi-functional to include capabilities such as 360 degree video capture and daily laser scanning … Read more
2022 Construction Outlook
Challenges & trends in year ahead By Sean Clements and Craig Tappel Shortages of just about everything but work have been coloring the construction industry since 2020 due to upheavals caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. That doesn’t look to be changing in 2022. That’s not necessarily going to be easy. Here are the forces you’ll have to contend with in 2022: No immediate fix for supply chain disruptions … Read more
Being a Champion for Innovation in the Field
By Tyler Williams The labor shortage in the construction trades is being felt by every contractor nationwide while, at the same time, speed-to-market pressures from customers are as strong as ever. We’re working to build the next generation of workers in the skilled trades, but we need to build today’s jobs at the same time. So, there’s a conundrum: crews in the field have little appetite for disruption, but new methods of working that could make delivery more efficient need time to take hold. We are surrounded by potential “solutions” to construction problems, but how do you know what is … Read more
