Augmented Reality App Created for Construction Visualization

SEATTLE, Wash. – Mortenson Construction has developed an augmented reality mobile app to help the University of Washington community “see” the future CSE2 computer science building – well before its doors open to students in January 2019. Similar to the popular Pokémon Go, users can either point their smartphones at the construction site on campus – or at a printed handout if off campus – to experience a life-like digital representation of the future CSE2 building. The app was developed by Mortenson’s in-house immersive-technology team in Seattle, a project led by Marc Kinsman. Users can experience the building’s exterior in … Read more

New Paper Predicts Construction Site of 2050

Balfour Beatty recently published its paper “Innovation 2050: A Digital Future for the Infrastructure Industry.” The construction site of 2050 will be in stark contrast to what we see today – it will be human-free with work moved offsite, remote control of machinery and new materials and techniques exploited to improve cost, safety and efficiency. While Balfour Beatty’s prediction for a human-free construction site may seem far-fetched, technology has already revolutionized contemporary life to such an extent that it’s not so hard to imagine radical changes for construction, not least the emergence of new roles and the requirement and evolution … Read more
