Gilbane Building Company joined Hudson River Park in celebrating the groundbreaking of the Pier 26 Science Play Area in New York City. Gilbane is managing construction of the recreational space in Hudson River Park. The groundbreaking was marked by a ceremony held at Pier 26 on Dec. 14. The 4,000-square-foot marine science-themed space is the beneficiary of a private fundraising campaign by Hudson River Park Friends and will feature custom, interactive sculptural elements where children can learn, play and be inspired by wildlife and the Hudson River habitat. Swinerton has topped out the nation’s first middle-income housing development constructed of mass timber; and the tallest mass timber building in Seattle, Washington. Heartwood is a workforce housing development standing at eight stories and 67,000 gross square feet. With a target completion in spring 2023, Heartwood will provide 126 affordable rental units, filling a critical need for middle-income workers such as teachers, nonprofit employees, healthcare professionals and others who are increasingly priced out of high-cost cities. Gilbane Building Company joined NYC Parks, NYC Economic Development Corporation and Bronx elected and community officials, to break ground on the $87-million Orchard Beach Pavilion project to restore the historic 140,000-square-foot space. The groundbreaking was celebrated with a ceremony on Dec. 13 at Orchard Beach. Gilbane is serving as the construction manager for the renovation project. The three primary objectives for the project are to restore the historic architecture of the landmarked building, provide greater ADA access and provide welcoming and viable amenities for the community. Pima County officials marked the start of construction of the new Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner, a $45-million facility designed to meet future growth within Pima County in Arizona and the region. Kitchell is overseeing the project construction, with design services provided by SmithGroup. The 34,000-square-foot facility will have two distinct zones.
