The construction industry lost 3,000 jobs on net in August, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Despite the monthly setback, the industry has recovered 881,000 (79.2%) of the jobs lost during earlier stages of the pandemic. Nonresidential construction employment declined by 20,300 positions on net, with all three subcategories registering losses for the month. Total construction spending ticked up from June to July, as gains in residential and public construction offset a dip in private nonresidential projects, according to a new analysis of federal construction spending data the Associated General Contractors of America recently released. Weber State University Celebrates Topping Out Ceremony
The new Noorda Engineering, Applied Science & Technology building at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, recently topped out. The project team includes general contractor Big-D Construction and architect VCBO Architecture. Painted purple and signed by several involved in the project, onlookers watched as the final beam was hoisted into place. Affixed to the beam was an American flag on one end and an evergreen tree on the other.
