Material and Labor Cost Escalation Continues to Drive Increases in Construction Costs

Turner Construction Company released its Second Quarter 2022 Turner Building Cost Index — which measures costs in the non-residential building construction market in the United States — had increased to the value of 1283. This represents a 2.23% quarterly increase from the first quarter 2022 and an 8.09% yearly increase from the second quarter 2021. The building costs and price trends tracked by the index may or may not reflect regional conditions in any given quarter. Construction Job Openings Decline, Says ABC

The construction industry registered 434,000 job openings in May, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors’ analysis of data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. The JOLTS survey defines a job opening as any unfilled position for which an employer is actively recruiting. Industry job openings decreased by 6,000 in May but are up 126,000 from the same month last year. Construction workers again quit their jobs at a faster rate than they were laid off or discharged in May. The quits rate of 2.9% was meaningfully above the layoff/discharge rate of 1.4%. … Read more

Gilbane Building Company, Wentworth Institute of Technology Break Ground on New Athletic Field, Integrated Parking Structure

Gilbane Building Company, STV and CD Smith have broken ground on a new integrated parking garage and athletic field project for Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts. Designed by CD Smith, the new fields and integrated parking structure will support Wentworth’s continued growth as an institution and further improve the quality of student life. The softball and soccer fields will meet NCAA regulations, with a future field expansion planned that will accommodate 200-500 spectators and athletes. The new athletic field and integrated parking structure is slated for completion by 2023.

Construction Begins on Career Technology Education Building at Rancho Buena Vista High School in California

Erickson-Hall Construction Co. and Vista Unified School District broke ground of the Rancho Buena Vista High School’s new career technology education building in Vista, California. The project was funded by Measure LL, a $247-million general obligation bond approved by voters in November 2018, targeted at supporting college and career readiness, repairing aging facilities and improving security. The National Association of Women in Construction Philadelphia Foundation and NEST Nurtures will host the 13th annual MyWIC camp. It will bring real-world experiences and mentorship to girls in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area this summer.
