Skanska, together with its joint venture partner Megen Construction, recently signed a contract for about $70 million with the University of Cincinnati to manage the renovation of its multi-purpose Fifth Third Arena. Renovations to the 26-year old facility, originally named the Myrl H. Shoemaker Center, include the creation of a 360 degree seating bowl with space for 11,500 spectators. Architecture Billings Index Shows Continued Modest Growth
WASHINGTON, D.C. – After beginning the year with a decline, the Architecture Billings Index has posted three consecutive months of increasing demand for design activity at architecture firms. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate 9-12-month lead time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects reported the April ABI score was 50.6, down from the mark of 51.9 in the previous month. Dockter Named Gilbane General Superintendent in Reno
RENO, Nev. – Danny Dockter has recently been named Gilbane Building Company’s general superintendent for the Reno, Nevada area. As a four-year veteran with Gilbane, Dokter’s responsibility for local projects will include ensuring worker safety, adherence to project schedules and delivering quality projects to Gilbane’s clients and partners. Dockter has been with Gilbane since 2012 and has more than 30 years of construction industry experience, starting with his apprenticeship in the Carpenters Union Local 971. Dokter has delivered a multitude of successful and award-winning projects including being a past recipient of the firm’s Paul J. Choquette Safety Excellence Award.
New Construction Starts in April Slide 8 Percent
NEW YORK, New York – The value of new construction starts in April fell 8 percent from the previous month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $608.3 billion, according to Dodge Data & Analytics. Nonresidential building pulled back following its sharp March increase and the non-building construction sector showed improvement, with public works strengthening after its lackluster March performance. Through the first four months of 2016, total construction starts on an unadjusted basis were reported at $198.4 billion, down 12 percent from the same month a year ago.
