National Science Foundation Awards Research Funding to Advance Performance-Based Fire Design for Cold-Formed Steel Structures

A research project progressing from the American Iron and Steel Institute’s Small Project/Fellowship Program has received significant funding through the National Science Foundation to advance performance-based fire design for cold-formed steel structures. Thomas Gernay, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Systems Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, was named a recipient of the NSF’s Faculty Early Career Development Award for nearly $580,000 over five years. The award will enable research to develop an advanced science-based framework for assessing the fire performance of cold-formed steel structures that results in more accurate modeling to ensure increased public safety, resource efficiency … Read more

AISI Reaccredited by ANSI as American National Standards Developer

The American Iron and Steel Institute has been reaccredited by the American National Standards Institute under its revised operating procedures for documenting consensus on AISI-sponsored American National Standards. The revised procedures replace the previous version approved June 13, 2017. AISI serves as Secretariat for two standards-developing committees: 1) the Committee on Specifications, which addresses the broad range of cold-formed steel structural member behavior and design for building construction, and 2) the Committee on Framing Standards, which focuses on cold-formed steel light-frame construction. These two committees engage a volunteer force of nearly 200 active participants through numerous subcommittees and task groups … Read more

American Iron and Steel Institute Publishes New Standard

The American Iron and Steel Institute has published AISI S250-21, North American Standard for Thermal Transmittance of Building Envelopes With Cold-Formed Steel Framing, 2021 Edition, as a single source for calculating the thermal transmittance of walls and ceiling/roof envelope assembles that contain cold-formed steel framing. The standard is intended for adoption and use in the United States, Canada and Mexico and is available for free download at www.aisistandards.org. AISI S250-21 was developed to eventually supersede the many methods currently found in various energy codes and standards, most of which are limited to calculating wall assemblies at 16 or 24 inches … Read more
