Recent Data Bulletin Focuses on Safety Management During Pandemic

The November 2021 issue of the CPWR Data Bulletin examines construction safety management during the COVID-19 pandemic. The new Data Bulletin summarizes impacts of COVID-19 on businesses and on safety and health priorities, including plans, practices and policies to prevent viral spread. It analyzes data from Census Bureau’s weekly Small Business Pulse Surveys and from the 2021 Construction Safety Management Survey by Dodge Data & Analytics with support from CPWR. Mark Your Calendars for Safe + Sound Week Aug. 9-15

CPWR is an organizing partner in OSHA’s Safe + Sound Campaign — a year-round, nationwide effort to raise awareness of the value of workplace safety and health programs. Data Bulletin Updates COVID-19’s Impact on Construction

The June 2021 Data Bulletin found on the CPWR website provides another update on how the pandemic is affecting construction employment and businesses, as well as information on workers’ attitudes about vaccination. This new issue shows that between March 2020 and April 2021, the number of jobs in the industry declined significantly, but then rebounded and surpassed pre-pandemic levels. This trend was particularly strong among Hispanic construction workers. The Data Bulletin also shows that the COVID-19 vaccination rate was lower among workers in construction and extraction occupations than in any other major occupation category, and 42% of construction workers remained hesitant to get vaccinated. Data Center Launches Fatality Map Dashboard

To continue raising awareness of construction hazards and the need for improved safety in the industry, CPWR’s Data Center has developed the Construction Fatality Map Dashboard. It builds on the Construction Fatality Maps, which were launched in 2011 to support the National Campaign to Prevent Falls in Construction. The new dashboard combines data from OSHA fatality investigations and online media sources gathered since 2011. It allows computer or mobile device users to search construction fatalities by four filters: Year, Event Type (major categories such as falls), State and Date.

Worker Safety on Worker’s Memorial Day from the Desk of CPWR Executive Director Chris Trahan

Fifty years ago on April 28, the Occupational Safety and Health Act went into effect. It created two federal agencies vital to protecting American workers: the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. April 28 is also Workers’ Memorial Day in the U.S., the National Day of Mourning in Canada and International Workers’ Memorial Day around the globe.
