Drone-powered site modeling reduces risk, reinforces schedule accuracy By Dominic Corrado Without an accurate, holistic image of your starting position and careful tracking along your journey, how can you ensure you stay the course and reach your intended destination? In preparation for vertical construction, excavation and backfill can entail a significant amount of risk when the requisite volumes are based on estimates. So many elements of further procurement and planning depend on an accurate estimate of the total earthwork to be moved or removed, and even small fluctuations can have lasting impacts. To mitigate risk, our teams have been deploying … Read more

Paving the path for the future construction workforce By Rob Harvey The construction industry is on the cusp of a significant transformation, driven by rapidly advancing technology. However, as innovation accelerates, an aging workforce presents a critical challenge. Constructing more buildings keeps construction inflation under control, but — to build more — the industry needs more workers: around 723,000 per year. With many experienced professionals nearing retirement, a growing labor shortage threatens to stall progress and increase costs. This pressing issue underscores the need for innovative solutions to attract and train the next generation of tech-enabled construction workers. One promising … Read more

5 key benefits of advanced inspection systems on the jobsite By John Yunker In a recent report from Autodesk + FMI, 71% of building owners said capturing and retaining data during design and construction helps reduce lifecycle operations costs. While this data can be obtained using several methods, at Skanska we’ve found that using AI, machine learning and advanced technology to collect data can reduce costs on utility usage, repairs and future replacements. At Skanska, we have begun using drones – unmanned aerial vehicles – to inspect existing buildings, allowing us to collect data more efficiently, especially on key structural … Read more
North Shore University Hospital Unveils $560M Surgical Tower
North Shore University Hospital’s new $560-million, 288,000-square-foot Petrocelli Surgical Pavilion has opened. The tower will complement nationally recognized cardiac, neurosurgery and transplant programs. Skanska USA served as the general contractor on the project. This investment by Northwell Health represents one of the most significant projects of its kind in the New York metro area, with about 40% of all patients at NSUH coming from Queens, while another 5% travel more than 100 miles to seek care. Ground was broken on the capital project in April 2020, which was made possible, in part, through a significant gift from Attilio and Beverly … Read more
Sentera Expands Mapping Capabilities with New Drone System
Sentera’s ultra-high-resolution RGB sensor – the 65R – is now compatible with its PHX fixed-wing drone, lowering the cost and time required to produce accurate digital surface models and imagery products for several industries, including agriculture, construction, infrastructure and environmental monitoring. 65R’s global shutter and fast frame rate combine to quickly produce exceptional imagery, free from distortions produced by electronic rolling shutter cameras and with a rugged “no moving parts” design ideal for the sometimes-challenging physical environment onboard a drone. With 65 million pixels per frame of global shutter imagery, the 65R is an outstanding tool to produce 3D products … Read more
