Skanska has begun the second phase of renovations and expansion of the Kymenlaakso Central Hospital located in Finland. The project is owned by Carea-Sairaalat Oy. Carea-Sairaalat Oy, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Kymenlaakso Medical and Social Services Joint Undertaking.
The expansion comprises a total of five floors, one of which is entirely—and the other partly—underground. The project will take place in a functioning hospital. Skanska’s work will begin in November-December 2017 and the contract will be completed in August-September 2019. Once complete, the hospital will have a new maternity unit, maternity clinic, operations unit, emergency room, intensive care unit, four private patient rooms, technical facilities and service facilities.
The renewal of the central hospital brings significant improvements for both staff and customers. “The most notable changes are the on-call, stand-alone separate waiting rooms for children and adults, and the collection of imaging and laboratory samples in the on-call service area. In addition, we have one-on-one observation facilities for the emergency room where the patient’s privacy can be taken into consideration much better than today, “says Sami Loimas, senior vice president, Carea-Sairaalat Oy.
The new building addition will include operating rooms for various vascular interventions. The facade of the hospital is mainly brick and glass elements that alternate with varying color shades.
In recent years, Skanska has implemented KYS Kuopio Hospital in Kuopio and Omasairaala in Koskitammi Tampere. In addition, Skanska will introduce a new hospital to Kainuu, to be completed in 2021, with its alliance partners Caverion and Sweco; and will build the Pohjola Hospital, to be complete in 2018, in Kupitta, Turku. In addition, Skanska has just launched the second phase of Lahti City Hospital Reform.
