Reconstruction, Expansion Plans for Heinz Steyer Stadium in Germany Receive Green Light

Lord Mayor Dirk Hilbert and representatives of BAM Sports GmbH recently signed the general contractor agreement for the conversion and expansion of the Heinz Steyer Stadium into a multifunctional sports and event facility, located in Dresden, Germany.

The order includes general contractor services for a turnkey and operational handover to the state capital Dresden, including all the necessary planning and construction services. The order volume is around 34 million euros.

A stadium with 5,000 covered seats is being built, supplemented by a multifunctional building as a south stand. A new fencing hall, sports and fitness rooms, squash courts and a multifunctional area for sports and education are being built on four floors in this approximately 140-meter-long structure. There are also offices and rooms for clubs, sports medicine, gastronomy and other commercial providers.

Mobile grandstands in the curves can temporarily expand the stadium’s audience capacity to up to 15,000 people, thus creating the conditions for the German Athletics Championships in Dresden. A surrounding floodlight ring integrates already existing parts of the stadium such as the north stand. A new square is being created between the ball sports arena and the Heinz Steyer Stadium as the central entrance to the Ostra Sports Park. This can be used in connection with sporting events or for other events such as public viewings.

Construction work will begin in October 2021 with the demolition of the stone grandstand and the excavation of the construction pit. The shell will be built from December 2021 to autumn 2022. The expansion work will begin in August 2022 and will take about a year. At the same time, the outdoor facilities and the infield will be prepared from December 2022. The handover is planned for autumn 2023.
