Construction is complete on the new Behavioral and Social Sciences Building at California State University, Chico, located in California. The 94,000-square-foot facility sets a new benchmark for sustainable construction, while fostering cutting-edge research, collaboration and student success. Turner Construction Company served as the general contractor on the project.
Earning LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, the new build incorporates energy-efficient systems. As the first net-zero building on the Chico State campus, it will generate more renewable energy than it consumes. Sustainable features include solar panels, LED lighting, a chilled beam cooling system, native plants throughout the landscape and a water-efficient infrastructure. Eco-conscious materials were also used, including benches made from sustainably repurposed valley oak trees, reducing the project’s carbon footprint.
Turner incorporated sustainable practices into the construction of the project by using smart building technology to optimize temporary heating. By deploying sensors and transitioning to renewable diesel, carbon emissions were reduced, air quality improved and fuel consumption minimized. Additionally, the team diverted nearly 80 tons of clean drywall cutoffs from landfills by separating and recycling the material during construction. These efforts lowered the environmental impact, while increasing efficiency and cost savings on the project.
The building’s modern amenities, state-of-the-art technology and thoughtfully planned interiors are designed to enhance the academic experience. This multifunctional hub is home to nine academic departments, a large 130-seat lecture hall, 22 classrooms, five laboratories, study and breakout areas, an indoor arboretum and Love Bird coffee shop by alumna Rebecca Turi. It also houses the Community Legal Information Clinic and the Gender and Sexuality Equity Coalition. Its open floor plan and generous natural light create a welcoming environment where students can learn, study and connect.
