BAM Denmark to Build New School in Sluseholmen

The design and construction of a new school at Sluseholmen has been awarded to BAM Denmark, together with JJW Architects, consulting engineers AB Clausen and JL Engineering, Thing Brandt Landscape and Keingart, for the city of Copenhagen, Denmark.

The new three-track school will be built at Sluseholmen between Sjællandsbroen and by Stigbordene, and will accommodate approximately 840 students. In addition to the school itself, which will be on five floors (living room for the fourth floor), a parking garage and a sports hall will be erected. The sports hall, with its location at the top of the parking garage, will have views of the entire neighborhood and will serve as a landmark for the Sluseholmen neighborhood.

In its competition proposal, the city of Copenhagen focused on the school as a green city school which, despite its location in an urban environment, should take nature into the school and the school into nature. In the winning proposal, the presentation was edited to form part of the theme “circuit;” for example, The Nature Circuit, The Social Circuit, The Movement Circuit and The Building Circuit. Emphasis was placed on ensuring the outdoor areas are as green as possible and the proximity to the canals and the opportunities it provides for experience and learning are utilized.

The new school at Sluseholmen will serve as a green charge for the entire neighborhood, boasting an inviting green roof terrace landscape and close connection between the school and the surrounding neighborhood, and offering the district an attractive green urban space for play, movement and residence.

Construction will begin in the first part of 2021. The parking garage will be ready for use in July 2021, while the school will be completed by August 2023.
