Construction Employers Add 36K Jobs in January, Hourly Earnings Rise
Construction employment increased by 36,000 jobs in January to the highest level since August 2008, according to an analysis of new government data by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials said a possible new measure being discussed in Washington that would invest an additional $1.5 trillion in repairing and improving infrastructure would both help the sector continue to add jobs and attract new workers. “The construction industry has consistently added workers at nearly double the rate of the overall economy,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “The outlook remains positive for further growth in the industry. NCCER Elects 2018 Board President
NCCER elected C. Rockwell Turner, president of LPR Construction in Loveland, Colorado, as its 2018 board of trustees’ chairman. Turner will succeed Chip Reid, CEO of Current Builders in Pompano Beach, Florida, who remains a member of the executive committee. Andy Dupuy, president and CEO of Brown & Root, will serve as the 2018 vice chairman. Skanska Awarded Contract to Develop Virginia Tech Biomedical Research Addition
Skanska USA has been awarded a $68-million contract to complete the Virginia Tech Carilion Biomedical Research Addition, a 140,000-square-foot building on the Virginia Tech Carilion Health Sciences and Technology Campus in Roanoke, Virginia. This project, while contracted with Carilion Clinic, is a collaboration between Carilion Clinic and Virginia Tech. AECOM is the architect. The project is expected to be completed in February 2020.
