Bulletin Examines COVID-19, Health Disparities among Construction Workers

The new issue of CPWR’s Data Bulletin provides updated employment and health information on construction workers and risk estimates in the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings show that nearly 60% of the construction labor force has at least one factor (old age, underlying medical conditions, smoking, e-cigarette use or severe obesity) for potentially higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19, similar to the working population in general. Training Grant Awarded Ironworker Skills Institute

The Steel Erectors Association of America has awarded the Ironworker Skills Institute, located in Pell City, Alabama, this year’s SEAA Craft Training Grant. Designated for member companies who are newly implementing SEAA/NCCER Ironworker Training and Assessment programs, the grant covers initial setup, training for administrators, instructors and coordinators and custom training materials for Ironworker Levels 1-3, or similar curriculum. Now in its fifth year of operation, the Ironworker Skills Institute was established by John Garrison of Garrison Steel, for ironworkers to get training on rigging, welding and the use of safety equipment and tools. Dodge Momentum Index Flat in May

The Dodge Momentum Index moved a scant 0.1% lower in May to 129.2 (2000=100) from the revised April reading of 129.4. The momentum index, issued by Dodge Data & Analytics, is a monthly measure of the first (or initial) report for nonresidential building projects in planning, which have been shown to lead construction spending for nonresidential buildings by a full year. The commercial component of the momentum index rose 1.0% during the month, while the institutional component dropped 1.9%.
